Drug Interaction :
Polyvinyl alcohol is subjected to esterification reaction, characteristic for compounds with secondary hydroxy-groups. It collapses in strong acids and softens or dissolves in weak acids and alkalis. High concentrations of substance are incompatible with the inorganic salts, particularly phosphates and sulfates. Sedimentation of 5 % polyvinyl alcohol may be caused by reaction with phosphates. Formation of the gel from a solution of polyvinyl alcohol may occur in the presence of borax.
A solution of povidone is compatible with many inorganic salts, natural and synthetic resins and other substances. Interacts in solution with sulphathiazole, sodium salicylates, salicylic acid, phenobarbital, tannin and other substances. The effectiveness of some preservatives, such as thiomersal, may decline due to the formation of complexes with povidone.
